In Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, she describes a frightening dystopian futuristic society that consists of the compounds and the pleeblands. The compounds are home to â€Å"wealthier† class, that work in industrial plants during the day and enjoy the shopping malls and fancy dining at night. The pleeblands are nearly the exact opposite. Snowman, the main character of the novel and former inhabitant of the compounds, describes them as disease infested, drug ridden ghettos. These two communities could not be further separated. Unfortunately, it appears as if Margaret Atwood’s dystopia is upon us. They currently air throughout the world in Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and the U.K. The campaign is composed 56 television commercial ads and 9 web ads. Every commercial follows an extremely simple template of a horizontally linear camera angle with a plain white backdrop. On the right side famous celebrity male-actor Justin Long introducing himself as Mac, dressed in casual attire: usually blue jeans and a t-shirt. His character is shown to be youthfully laid back, charming and trendy or in other words â€Å"cool† by cultural standard. This is somewhat ironic considering most of his roles in the past he portrays the awkward teenager in desperate need of respect. On the other side you have comedian John Hodgeman dressed in a gray/brown business suit. He is portrayed as an uptight, clumsy, ignorant, data-crunching business person who is by no means cool in any definition of the word. Mac then responds â€Å"Well it sounds like you have a lot of stuff to do before you do any stuff so I’m going to get started because I’m kinda excited, let me know when your ready†. Then he enthusiastically jumps out of the box and runs out of frame as the moping PC explains it will be a while since he has parts in other boxes. This trend is repeated later in an ad where PC and Mac are receivin g therapy from a counselor. PC emotionally rants of how he constantly feels inadequate because he cannot do as many things as Mac can do out of the box. The counselor then instructs the two to say something nice about the other system/person. PC states â€Å"Well I guess you are better at creative stuff. even though it is juvenile and a complete waste of time.† Another example is when the two discuss how they share a lot of the same programs (like microsoft office) but still maintain what makes their systems unique. Mac optimistically points out PC’s abilities with spreadsheets. PC bashfully responds â€Å"Aw shucks† while Mac then goes on to claim how he is better at â€Å"life stuff†. When PC angrily asks him to define â€Å"better† Mac points out how simple and easy it is use the apple applications whereas it is difficult to create anything on a PC. As the campaign gains in popularity apple began taking less focus of the functionality of applications and placed attention on basic comparisons. In the ad entitled â€Å"Virus† PC has become extremely ill with the new â€Å"virus† going around as a result of malware planted on his computer through browsing. He goes onto explaining that last year there was a reported 114,000 known viruses on the internet in which his opponent replies â€Å"for PC’s not Mac’s† and hands him a tissue. This theme was carried over to an episode called â€Å"Spyware† in which PC is disguised in order to avoid spyware attacks and offers his mustache-sunglasses to Mac so he will be safe as well. Mac explains he runs Mac OS 10 and therefore does not have to worry about getting viruses, malware or spyware. A more recent advertisement that was done had a slightly different approach. In â€Å" Self Pity† Mac appears dressed in a business suit as well and explains that Mac’s can also do work stuff too. This does not sit well with PC as he falls into a self pitying tantrum. He stammers on about how he knew this day would come. It is important to take under consideration the four goals of a persuader. Only then can we truly understand why Apple has become a large success through the uses and gratifications theory. I will also discuss how the use of symbols has played an important role in order to identify with audience members and gratify certain needs. First of all, Apple attempts to identify with a specific group. Since computers are a tool used by a wide variety of people, demographics have little to offer in targeting and segmenting an audience. However using the demographic of age is a starting point in which is expanded through use of psychographics or segmenting audiences on the basis of values, lifestyles, attitudes, self image (lecture). Apple is directing their message to creative young adults who most likely favor creating movies, music and editing pictures over filling data in spreadsheets. Apple is saying this computer is trendy, youthful and cool. Take into account that the Mac is introduced as youthful but this does not mean it is limited to the youth. In a later ad, Mac informs the public and PC of an advancement that allows Windows systems to be run on Mac computers. He shows sympathy towards PC even though they are depicted as enemies. Lastly he is logical because the information he gives is supported by reason. Let’s refer back to the synechdote â€Å"stuff†. Mac is developed for anyone to use and I believe this correlation is noteworthy in regards to the knowledge gap and logos. This situation in which simplicity defeats complexity both equalizes and even empowers Mac users regardless of educational level. In this scenario symbols override any further explanation. An audiences responce to Hedda gabler Essay Hedda Gabler is a dramatic, exciting, confusing and at times unpleasant character, who is frustrated by a lack a freedom where she cannot be the wild and unstable free spirit that she wishes and this shines through throughout the play. From this frustration comes immense boredom which is in her case very deadly. She embodies some of the typical Aristotelian qualities of a tragic protagonist but Ibsen has put a strange twist on it. For example she is a woman of fortune. It has been made clear in the book that she was born into this high class lifestyle and has this fortune by no endeavour of her own. Therefore, by being placed at the top of the hierarchy, she has further to fall and there is more at risk than the average person. However, she is not really someone that people can identify or can have sympathy for, as neither generous nor courageous. Also, as is common her fatal flaw is her snobbery or pride. However, Aristotles notion of hamarita states that it is a matter of action not the character themselves. I dont believe this applies her and agree with the 20th century interpretation. This is not brought about by the unfortunate circumstances more than the character themselves. This applies very much to Hedda as her conflicted individual moral psychology which brings about the opposite of what the character intends. The Norwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsen was very specific about the time when he set Hedda Gabler. The late 19th century was a time where woman were secluded and deluded into an oppressive and subjugate lifestyle. Ibsen puts Hedda in this male dominated were she challenges the conventional middle class bourgeois housewife by acting in a dictating and manly way witch were to shock the 19th century audience at this truly outrageous and outspoken character. The audience can therefore not identify with Hedda because in more ways than one she brings about her own demise. The local newspapers and media were disgraced; such as the daily telegraph which said What a horrible story! What a hideous play! The play is simply a bad escape of moral sewage-gas Describing Heddas feelings as the foulest passions in humanity. This shows that the most tragic thing to me is that there are people her in this world. The play is started off with the stage layout, witch Ibsen perceptibly and carefully layout, giving a very bourgeois atmosphere each object has a lot of meaning to show the tragic nature of the play and Hedda. For example there are a lot of dark and dull colours hinting to things; such as saying autumn colours. Ibsen is using pathetic fallacy to show Heddas state of mind. Autumn is a time were everything around us is dying, dead leaves on the floor and animals hibernating. A time were there seems to be a deafening silence in the air following the summer which is usually buzzing with life. This could mean that maybe Hedda has passed the summer time in her life. A time when she was herself bloom perhaps and a time when she was also buzzing with colourful life. It is mentioned that Hedda used to go to parties and be a socialite. Then we see her state of mind at the present which is autumn. This already sets the scene of this play as pessimistic and cold. This is unusual for Ibsens targeted audience as they were used to cheerful and uplifting entertainment. Something to bewitch them into thinking their lifestyle was perfect as it was, which Hedda Gabler does not do in the slightest. Another thing that might have stunned the audience is Heddas awkwardness towards Miss Tesman and Mrs Elvsted. At a time were woman only socialized with woman it is interesting to see how she treats her fellow females in such a horrible manner. This is shown towards the beginning of Act1 were she calls Miss Tesmans hat to be servants hat. As Miss Tesman is Mr Tesmans mother figure she should also traditionally be Heddas too, so by disrespecting like that would cause the audience to empathise with Miss Tesman and detest Hedda and her behaviour. Hedda also has a very unusual characteristics she presented by Ibsen in a very masculine way. By doing this she is emasculating George Tesman. To begin with he does this himself with Mrs Tesman, the keyword for the first is claustrophobic for Hedda; witch, with me, causes some sympathy for Hedda. With a combination of the childish nicknames (like Georgie and aunty juju) and the dreaded flowers make it as much cringe worthy to the audience as it was to Hedda, which is shown when they leave when The most prominent way that this is done is through the pistols, General Gablers pistols.
